Welcome to the

Digital Patchwork Project!

The Digital Patchwork Project is a story activism project where women who have lived with domestic violence come together to stitch their hopes and dreams.

We share stories and stitch new stories of who we are and where we want to go. The patchwork project tells stories of change and courage. By using hand craft we want to inspire women to find peace and strength to find the direction they want for their lives.

We also want to create community - locally and globally and create awareness about domestic violence and what it takes to break free.

Approaches

The Patchwork approach to life

Life is like a patchwork. A large picture put together by many small actions and choices. Putting small scraps together into a larger picture is a method of living a life. we all have to start somewhere and work with what we got.

Story activism

Change your story - change your life!

Story activism is a method inspired by Mary Alice Arthur - a story activist who work with stories to make changes on both a personal and collective level.

Inspiration

The Afghan Freedom Quilt

The Afghan Freedom Quilt is the main inspiration for this project. It was initiated by the Afghan Diaspora living in Freemont, California.

The pieces in the quilt is embroidered by Afghan War Widows in the period 2003-2006 as a way of preserving ties between the diaspora and the widows left behind in Afghanistan.

The War Widows were a very vulnerable group living under very harsh conditions and the quilt was made to raise awareness and help funding.

The making of Arpilleras under Pinochet

Arpilleras are pictures made to protest and bring awareness to the kidnapping and murdering of people during Pinochet.

People came together in groups to sew together and the pieces were sold abroad

The old threads are unraveling,

Get your needles ready.

We are stitching a new quilt

of humanity.

Bring your old t-shirts,

worn out jeans, scarves,

antique gowns, aprons,

old pockets of plenty

who have held Earth's treasures,

stones, feathers, leaves,

love notes on paper.

Each stitch

A mindful meditation.

Each piece of material

A story.

The more color the better,

so call in the tribes.

Threads of browns, whites,

reds, oranges

Women from all nations

start stitching.

Let's recycle the hate, the abuse,

the fear, the judgment.

Turn it over, wash it clean,

ring it out to dry.

It's a revolution

of recycled wears.

Threads of greens, blues, purples

Colorful threads

of peace, kindness,

respect, compassion

are being stitched

from one continent to the next

over forests, oceans, mountains.

The work is hard

Your fingers may bleed.

But each cloth stitched together

Brings together a community.

A world, our future world

Under one colorful quilt.

The new quilt of humanity.
